My First ride with Madrasbulls

I really forgot the date but it was somewere in October or November the day before Diwali in 2002. I was all tensed to ride with a group as I am not used to it because riding all alone is totally a different experience. when riding alone its all upto you to decide your next move and sometimes your decision might be costly but if you are riding in a group you have your
pals with you to give you a helping hand in times of breakdowns or any emergencies after all pals are for that. The crowd really matters in an activity like riding as everyone has to gel with everyone to keep the fun up and moving. I was lucky enough to land up in a class crowd.
The night before the ride saw no preparations as usually everybody does went home late around 12 in the midnight. Got up at around 5 AM tool kit ready as usual, picked up my jeans and a couple of t-shirts kick started my bike by around 6.15 AM I was riding my A350 which we usually call her the wild beast, She really behaves like one. Reached the spot where all other guys were waiting, here I met a new kid (latter I came to know that guy is whole lot more) he was riding a 535 with a modified handlebar and the monster he is riding is just 5 times bigger than him. I had imagined that there will be some 15 to 20 bikes for the ride but was quite disappointed to see only four us. Now let me introduce them to you.

Brijesh - He works for a software company in chennai, a good pal of mine after meeting him at the club. A steady rider, does'nt get carried away on the highway and a caretaker of all the poor souls who get stuck on the highway. He rides an A350 as well.

Asher - A marine guy, who fixes radio's in the ships. A cool guy and a steady rider as well. We both joined the club on the same day.

Varun - This is the kid I was talking about, he rocked through the ride. A fantastic rider whose first long ride was Leh and back on his 350 which he did the day after he got his driving license. He was 18 yrs old when he did that ride, a free spirit, a mechanic, a rider and a great pal. The sad part is Varun is no more. He died after he met with an accident on his way back to Chennai from Pakisthan a prestigious ride organised by the Royal Enfield themselves. Now do I call him a kid??? We all miss him so much.

Dodo - Again works for a software company, a technical guy and a good rider who missed to reach the highest motorable road because of heavy rains in Kashmir in 2004. He is supposed to join us there in Yelagir with Harsh. Dodo rides the famous Green 500 1999

Harsh - Used to work for Star TV in chennai but recently shifted his base to Mumbai. Rides a 350 and his bike popularly known as GJ by the registration it carries

Ok now where are we going...Destination Yelagiri a hillock 210 kms from chennai.
Finally we hit the road at 7.15 A.M taking the bangalore highway. First stop was somewhere around 9.15 A.M for tea where I was told that Dodo is late as he has gone to wake up Harsh who was not answering the phone (Courtesy Johnny Walker Shhh...) and we took off from there to stop for breakfast at around 10.30 A.M after Sriperambadur. Here I got a call from my mom saying that she fell down and she suspects fracture, she called me because dad was not picking up the phone. Now I cant go back and I cant ride either it was a difficult situation so I decided to ride on and keep 30 mins as cut off, if my dad doesnt pick up the phone in 30 mins I am going back fortunately dad had answered my mom call and he was rushing back home. So still worried I didnt have any interest in the ride but was riding and this information about my mom I didnt share with anyone till the next evening. It was a great ride as I have told you before that I was worried to ride in a group for the first time but as the time passed and speedometer rushing to show me 100 and above everything came to be normal for me. Midway dad called and told me that my mom was ok now and it was not a fracture but a sprain I heaved a sigh of relief and moved on with the group. Perfect Climate, perfect group, perfect bike what else you need
on your first ride.

So the riding group reaches the foothills of Yelagiri at noon and we all parked our bikes there to take a nap as we are supposed to wait for another group that was coming from Bangalore. In a short time the bangy guys reached. The guys David, Ajay from Gujarat and a cool dude from Wanderers (sorry pal I know you have a big beard but I forgot your name). After relaxing for sometime we started climbing the ghats and reached a resort called Country Club whose manager Mr.Praveen happens to be dodo's friend. We were taken to the rooms and there we crashed after a great ride. At this time Dodo and Harsh lands up with dodo having a wound in his right palm reason being hairpin, hairpin bend, sexy turn, brakes and a fall thats it. His dad
being a doc he knew how to handle it and after dressing the wound we were all ready for the party.

An interesting point that has to be noted here is not one of the many mobile phones has signals and we have to go down the ghats quite a distance to make phone calls to all our loved ones namely girlfriends ( you know they throw tantrums if the phone they are trying to
reach comes back with a voice "NOT REACHABLe"). So before the party started we decided to finish the phone session so we can rest in peace at least for the night. Here started the drag down hill with Dodo and Varun, I am telling you these guys were mad, no helmets, no safety gear no light and still they were ripping down the ghats until they reached a place where they
found that all the phones became alive. I have to call my girl friend (I really had one that time believe me). After all the good night, sweet dreams and I love you's our friend Asher discovers that his bike is not going to wake up for his bike's fuse have blown up. Dodo man of the moment jumps into the scene and fixes up the bike for Asher and again we hit the ghats up hill for the party.

The party starts, we have a camp fire, booze and all the other food that is on earth laid down neatly before us. David from RTMC suddenly brings up some rockets that he has bought on the way to Yelagiri being a day after diwali he had got those rockets at rock bottom prices ok now its time to paint the sky with colours. Harsh who was having a digi cam agreed to shoot the entire sequence and there we started to send the rockets but where??? the rockets started flying in all directions expect the direction they are supposed to fly god damned we were running in all directions to save our skins thankgod the bottle that was used to light the rockets bursted and stopped the rest of the action (never buy rockets in discount). We had fun altogether that evening when someone from the crowd announced that one guy called solo will be joining us in a short while and he was riding from cochin to reach Yelagiri. He has started at around 2.00 PM that evening and expected to reach us by midnight when suddenly I heard a bullet roaring in the ghats. The place where we were staying was not on the road but you have take a small slushy path from the road to reach our place and any new person wont be able to find that even during day time and imagine this situation at nights. The worst being Solo doesnt know the place where we were staying and no mobile phones (remember??) to call us, these things made life miserable for Solo, fortunately I heard a bullet sound and informed dodo about it because he was less sloshed than anybody else. Dodo and varun started off the check if it was Solo, as they went out of the resort they heard a party happening in the next resort and they playing the famous song "O Podu" which resembled the beat of a bullet and after cursing me they came back to the resort hmmm I was wrong...Our party got over somewhere around 12.00 and one by one went off to the bed to crash.

It was 2.30 A.M that night and someone woke me up and introduced me to a person saying "Jai meet Solo, Solo meet Jai" while I was sleeping, I got up said hi to him and went back to sleep. I was sharing a room with Brijesh I remember some conversation going on for a while. The next morning I got up and remembered that someone came inside the room last night and my question was who opened the door for him as Brijesh denied opening the door, while this investigation was on our friend Asher came forward and declared he opened the room as he was sleeping in the front hall OK now my question answered my next question who opened the door for Asher. (I am telling it is not been answered yet). Finishing this conversation I dressed up after a hot shower and went out of the room. It was a lovely morning, bright sunlight neat landscapes all around the resort and smoking hills at the east end of the place. On the pathway a small figure was sitting on a cane chair wearing the famous "NICK SANDERS" T-shirt and smoking. I guessed this person should be solo as I didnt see him the day before. Seeing the t-shirt I know he is a RIDER ( I dont take this word lightly) a true rider. I introduced myself to him and we both were talking for a while and that day became a memorable one for me as we both became great friends with whom I ride a lot with.

Meet Solomon Jacobs...a.k.a Solo, his profession being an artist who is very good in Ajantha paintings which I came to know later. He paints, sells them and with the money he sets off on his bike anywhere his bike takes him. You cant believe this guy who had done all India trips twice and lots of other rides which demands talent, determination and the energy from above
to do such kind of rides. For instance he has crossed chambal valley at midnight, now you should be able to get a picture of the RIDER I am talking about. He travels till his money get exhausted and the next day you can see him painting at his home...getting ready for the next ride. Solo is a great person to be with on the highway and off the highway also, one of the most reliable person who you can trust on the highway. After we became friends we had been the sweep for the entire riding group, attending break downs and other emergency and seeing that the group reaches in one piece. A great friend I got on the highway.

Now coming back to our resort, we started packing to leave Yelagiri after customery hugs, tea and smokes we saw off the bangalore guys and started proceeding towards Chennai, home sweet home. At the party the night before Varun pointed out that I was the slowest rider in the group. He doesnt know that my mom was injured back at home and thats when I shared the news with the rest of the group and added that after an accident which I met in the city sometime back I wasnt taking chances. Varun replied saying "Dude when you make a mistake in city traffic you might be injured but when you make a mistake on the highway you die" and this line always keeps ringing in my ears even now. So I wanted to prove a point here that I am as good as he is on the highway. I was doing good speeds all through the way back and Dodo had asked us to visit his house in vellore on our way back, so we headed towards his house that splendid evening. Oh my what a house was that right in the middle of the some well grown trees and no signs of life around half sqkm around that place and in the middle of those trees stands the majestic and magnificient house. Dodo's dad is a doctor by profession and he recieved us well. Jolly old gentleman gave us some biscuits and tea and from there he gave us directions how to hit highway at the shortest.

The pack after saying bye to the Daniels rolled on to the highway on before we hit the highway there was one small but beautiful patch of landscape and here all the photographically inclined stopped to show there might as all the yashicas, canons and wide angles came to life, people without cameras were left to capture the scene in memory. AFter some 30 mins we left that place and continued the ride back to Chennai. As were ripping down suddenly my bike lost her timing sense and the engine was hotter than normal. Now you may ask me does an A350 engine depends on timing? my answer is if you know how an A350 functions you know what I am talking about. Solo, Brijesh was with me that time and we three stopped to check when solo who
was checking the engine came out with a heart breaking news that we cant ride her back to chennai as she started functioning abnormaly and either she has to be towed or transported to chennai. I just could'nt take this news and I decided I am not giving up on her and finally convinced the group that I am confident on taking her back home safely. We had sometime left and there we left her to cool down when we had chai and smokes, by the time we finished she was all set to hit the road again.

That was the lost stop we had on our way back, and reached home by around 7.00 Pm. This was my first trip with Madrasbulls a memorable one where I got meet lot of friends like Solo,Varun,Dodo,Brijesh,Asher and Harsh. I didnt know then it was only a start to meet people and now my list goes on and on.

I have to thank Mathangi for being the insipiration behind this blog without her I dont think I would have shared this experience with you.
